Opened in 1996, The Odeon at the Quay was the first Odeon multiplex in Scotland, rather than a conversion of an existing cinema, and was the blueprint for new cinemas in Dunfermline, Dundee, Kilmarnock and the forthcoming cinema at Braehead.
Housed in a leisure development in Springfield Quay on the South bank of the Clyde, the Odeon was an immediate success, benefiting from good public transport links and car parking and for some time after opening, taking business away from Odeon Renfield Street, although this subsequently leveled off.
Programming is mainly typical multiplex fare, particular successes include Trainspotting, Titanic, Gladiator and the film that holds the Quay's house record, The Full Monty supplemented by occasional one-day shows of cult films like Alien and special events like a Star Trek or Carry On day, although in the case of the Carry Ons the prints, perhaps not surprisingly, had seen better days.
Such has been the popularity of The Quay that fixtures and fittings designed for a
much longer life started to wear out after the first few years and in 1999 a refurbishment programme, replacing carpets and seats was started. In addition the kiosk and shop have been given a make over and, in common with all other Odeons, new signage in the revised Odeon typeface was fitted.
In February 2000, The Odeon at The Quay along with the rest of the chain was sold by Rank who had owned and developed Odeon for 58 years, to Cinven, a venture capital company who already owned ABC cinemas.
Although the subsequent rationalisation would close Glasgow's only remaining ABC cinema the ABC Muirend, for a brief period both of Glasgow's South side cinemas were owned by the same company and it wasn't uncommon to find Odeon Quay staff providing cover for Muirend, doubtless causing some confusion to patrons suddenly encountering Odeon uniforms in an ABC cinema !
The closure of Renfield Street and the opening of Odeon Braehead in 2006 now concentrates all Odeons south of the river for the first time.
