The Cowcaddens of the 1800s was a far cry from the barren, motorway scarred area of today.

Cowcaddens then was a bustling community, full of houses, shops, pubs, factories and theatres including The Prince of Wales Music Hall which opened in 1867 and was one of Glasgow's oldest music halls.

Following a fire in 1869, a vast new theatre was built on the site and was refurbished in 1881 as The Grand. Taken over by the mighty Moss's Empires circuit in1909.

Regular film shows started in 1915 only for the building to be gutted by another fire the same year from which a more compact venue, The New Grand Picture Theatre emerged.

A further rebuild in 1926 provided 1,768 seats and took the New Grand through to March 1959 when it closed and became part of Dallas's warehouse next door.

Along with much of Cowcaddens, the New Grand was demolished in 1966 as part of the redevelopment of the area.
