Welcome to my Glasgow Cinemas website.

Glasgow's love of the cinema goes back almost to the start of film making itself, early shows were held in Glasgow Corporation halls, in theatres or as a fairground attraction.

The first purpose - built Glasgow cinema, The Electric Theatre, opened in Sauchiehall Street in 1910, since when there have been nearly 200 cinemas in Glasgow. The golden age of cinema building in Glasgow was the 1930s, when magnificent picture palaces like the Paramount, Vogue, Regal, Lyceum and Bedford were built, during this time it was not uncommon for two cinemas to open in the same week, or even the same day.

Today areas of Cinema City which could once boast several cinemas including a local Odeon or ABC now have none, the victims of redevelopment, changing public tastes, economics and technology.

The scale of this subject means that Glasgow Cinemas will always be a work in progress so please be patient if your area of Glasgow or favourite cinema isn't included just yet. The names of many Glasgow cinemas changed over the years so I've used the generally accepted name.

I have tried to make navigation as simple as possible - click on the Cinema Locations button and then on the area of Glasgow you want which takes you to a street map - clicking on the cinema's button takes you to the appropriate pages. Alternatively, use the Cinema A - Z section.

Since the last update, a new section, Cinema People is now "live" and will be the home of biographies of cinema architects, proprietors, managers, projectionists and others responsible for Glasgow's rich cinema history, the first of these are Charles J. McNair and George Singleton.

Other highlights include superb pictures of the ceiling of The Grosvenor, Hillhead, courtesy of David Carson of the G1 Group and ace photographer Mac Rhind. Also included in this update are new pictures of the Vogues Knightswood, a close up of the ceiling of the La Scala and interiors of the Tatler, Sauchiehall Street

If you have any comments about my site, memories of a particular Glasgow cinema or material you would like to share please contact me. I look forward to hearing from you.
